APPEAL TO GOVEBXMEXT. rJ3ie "Wanganui and District Derelopmeiit Leaguc; has takcn up the cudgels on behalf of the Wanganui river farmers, wlio are complaining tlurt the freights tliey pay on i'crtiliscrs are out of all proportion to that paid on freights delivered bv the railwav. Tliey maintain that as the rivcr servic-e is subsidised by tlie G'overnment ihe freights charged for the carriage of fertilisers should he the same as that chargod for carriage of fertilisers by the railway. The i'ollowing replv has been rcceived by tlie league to a lettev to tiie Hjnister of Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes : — "I ara in receipt of your letter in which bv diroction of your league, you make inquiries as Lo whether any relief can he granted to farmers on the Wanganui river in the matter of fertiliser freights. In replv T have to inform you that similar applications have heen received from Irack-block localities in niany parts of the Dominion aird the question as to whether any aiTangeirjent can bc made whereby the settlers in sucli localities can he placed in a positioii equally ad- ' vantageous with those living in the k vicinitv of railway lines is now heing considered by the Governmcnt. I shall let you have a further reply as soon ' as possible."
