FOR YEARS NOW the Spring lias been heralded in Napier by the institution known as Shopping Week, and for years tbis break in tlio ordinary life ©f tbe community has proved welcome, Bot only to tbose residing within tbe district itself, but also to the liundreds ©f country folk who xnake tbeir way 'tcwards tbe (ity, wbere tbe brigbt I'ghts. and gav festivities beckon and nwait to welcome them. Tbis year, as in tbe past, elaborate preparations have been in band by tbe conimittee for some time in order to assure an even greateT success tban has been the case in past years, and ou Alonday next, tbe week's activities Svill be commenced with tbe release oi a flock of balloons in Emerson fctreet, preceded by a few words of welcome from Mr J. Yigor Brown, Mayor of Napier. Eor many days past the shopkeepers of Napier have been busily engaged in beautifying tbeir windows, and it can truly be said tbat never before liave tbey prov'ded a more attractive spectacle tban at tbe pre6ent time, on tbe eve of the 1929 Napier Sbopping iW eek. Napier, y-clept the city of sunshine hnd sea breezes, is rightly so and it is not until its fortunate residents lcave the fold lor otber spots or otber climes tbat the true cbami of tbe Napier weather and its value to tbe pbysical fitness of tbe community is realised. Tbere are times in Napier, as in all places, wben tbe sun is hidden from our gaze, but tbis is not usual and all will join in tbe unanimous hope tbat during tbis year's Sbopping Week tbe sun will ' not hi'de its face and by so doing dim tbe natural beauties of our city or the eajoyment of those wlio have come to [articipate in our festivij'es. With regari to the opening of the veek, eacb balloon tbat is released, as tbe Mayor cuts the ribbon stretched across the top of Emerson street, will bear the name of a Napier firm, and sny cbild securmg a balloon, on pre6enting it to tbe firm wboso name is inscribed thereon will be tbe recipient of a gift. Tbis offer daes not apply to adults. Tbroughout tbe week various compe-i-itions and races will be beld, for which prizes c-f varying values are offered, and as in tbe past, entliusiastic flVWWVAVA'AVW.'.

There will be many incentives for people to spend tbeir money in Napier, for besides tbe attractions wbicb tbe shops themseb'es have to offer, free morning and afierncon teas are pffered to all tbose who spend £1 or more at any sbop, wnile for tbe outlay of £2, besides obtainiug exeellent^ value for tbe money, customers will receive dockets entitling tbem to free 'Uncbeons. Attention is called to tbe fact tbat tliese offers only apply to persons living outside the radius of ten miles from Napier. Tbat event vhieb bas increased in popularity eacb year, tbe baby show, v ill again be held, in tbe Municipal Theatre, on Tuesday, wben it is fully expected tbat last year's record at'tendance of yelling youngsters and proud parents will be exceeded. Dr. Cashmere bas kindly consented to unrlertake tbe difficult task of judging tbe infantx and children in tbe various classes. Every age and condition of child is catered for and for eacb class there are excellent prizes, while tbe cbampion baby will be tbe iecipient of a dozen cabinet pbotos in wbicb the pa.-ents are relatives no doubt take tbe greatest pride. Wednesday will be marked by more 'ompetitions and on Thursday an extra balloon ascent will be made under tbe s_ime conditions as tbose wbicb govern the release at tbe opening of fest.vities, while on Friday, one of tbe great events of the week, tbe mothers' T-ram or push cart race, will be conducted. Tbis in tbe past Has proved an exnemely populac event and large crowds bave gatbered to cheer tbe mothers on tbeir way. On Saturday tbe grand Sbopping Week will con-lude and for tbe final day tbere will be plenty to occupy the energies of the multitude. Tbe morning will be devoted to a final dash rou.'id the shops to make iast-minute purcliases, while in the aftarnoon tbe representative football piatch,. Soutbland v. Hawke's Bay, wvill take place at McLean Park, Napier, while m tbe evening there will be plenty to amuse in tbe talkies, dancing and cther entertainments.
