THE RIVERS BILL
COMMITTEE HEARING TO TAKE PLACE TO-MORROW. DEPUTATIONS LEAVE FOR MELLINGTON. The Rivers Board Amendment Bill, to give the hoard power to proceed with the necessary steps for the carrying out of its flood prevention scheme, comes hefore the local bills committee in Wellington to-morrow, so that evi-denc-e in support of it and objections to it can he heard hefore the bill goes to the Iiouse of Representatives for the seeond reading. The Rivers Board chairman, Mr W. G. Jarvis, and the secretary, Mr W. J. Pallot, proceeded to Wellington a few days ago to give evidence in support of the bill and hy this morning's express train Messrs H. R. Clnrk and G. Latliam (Rivers Board), P. Higgins (Napier City Council) and C. H. Williams (Taradale Town Board) also left for Wellington to support the hill. rJ.'he attitude to be adopted by the Hastings Borough Council in respect to the rivers problem was decided opo n 011 Tlnirsday evening. when it was agreed that the council offer no obiections to the bill provided_ that the two clauses relating to rating he deleted. Tlie board decidcd at its last meeting |tliat tliese clanses he deleted. Representatives of the Clive and District Ratepayers' Assoeiation also left to-day for Wellington to voice tTieir obiections to the hill when it comes before the committee. Mr D. Scannell ncconmanied the nartv as connsel.
