WELLINGTON, Saturday. After a somewhat unpronnsmg. outlook this morning Ihe weather hroke fine for tlie North v. South match, altliough a keen southerly blew downfield. Athletic Park was on the soit side, but in good order. The attendance was about 20,000 at tlie start. Steere (Hawke's Bay) replaced Harvey (Wairarapa) in tlie Nortli team. North won the toss and played with the wind, facing the sun. Matters were lively from the outset, play being earried to the North territory by Holden, who sent tlie South backs away, but McDonald missed liis pass. Porter and the North backs were seen in sonie dangerous moves, and in a hrilliant cnt in hy Cooke nearly resulted bi Elvy getting over. The South fonvards were showing to ndvantage and plnying a hig part in keeping tlie Nortli out. RAPID SCORING. A splendid line kick hy Cnoke put tho North on Ihe attack. Tlie ha] 1 went out to Lucas, who side-stepped through the opposition for a great try Heazlewood converted. Smothering work hy the South forwards when the Nortli heeled from a scrum ou their twenty-five ended with the North being penalised. Strang kickecl a heautiful goal. In subsequent play in tlie South territory Jolinson cut through and made a .glorious opening for Cooke, who raced over under the i posts. Heazlewood ronverted. Strang kicked another good penalty and tlien a hrilliant South movement, backs and fonvards co-operating, sent Snow across under tlie posts. Strang missed. Mill and Johnson pnved the way for a hrilliant run by Cooke, which sent Finlayson over. Heazlewood converted Tlie faultless passing of the South team shattered the North defence again, Strang sooriiig nnd convei'ting his own try, making the half time score : — North Island 15 South Island 14 THE SECOND SPELL. The Southerners came with a rusli after the interval. Strang nearly dribbled over. In a snappv passing rush the ball was sent out to McDonald, who failed to gather in the pass. Mill brought relief after scrambling on the line. South were having the better of the exclianges, keeping tlieir opponents bustled. Scrimshaw came through with the ball at the toe and Stewart nearly got over. Johnson cleared. A spectacular movement hy tlie North backs, Cooke, Lucas and Minns participating, saw the last named kick infield for Cooke to secure and race over at the postsHeazlewood converted. _ In further bright play, during which Strang kiclc' a penalty, tlie North forwards attacked. A clearing kick went to Elvy, who dived for a "reat try past three opponents at the corner. Heazlewood missed. Play liovered in niid-field, the forwards fighting the issue out. . Tlie South had a period on the attack, but were unable to finalise tlieir movements. The North generally gained ground when able to use their backs, who were fed cleverly by Nlill under difficulties. The South pack had a cliange in tiglit play. The sun was now strong in the faces of tlie Southerners. Strang raised the South's score with a great penaltv goal from wide out. Briliiant play by Porter, Elvy and Lucas saw Lucas race from near halfway to score a runaway try in the corner. Heazlewood missed. Near the finish Porter broke away witli a hnrst of speed from a scrum near the touchline to midfied to Harris. He passed to Minns, who scored in the corner. Heazlewood missed. Tt was a great effort.
