Mr Johnstone, who was' appeariitg in a will case, said that experience had establislied that it was cheaper to cease expenses at homo and_ make a trip ahroad. In this case plaintiff had no family ties to keep her at home. _ "Is it not an odd doctrine that trips ahroad are less expensive than staying in New Zealand?" asked Mr Justice Smith. Mr Johnstone said that he knew of instances in which it had been cheaper to go ahroad. "New Zealanders are great trav'ellers," remarked His Honour. Mr Johnstone said that he had known cf a definite case of people who had gone to England for a year and let their houses and' had actunlly found it cheaper. Tn the end • tliey had spent less money. "Where do these fortunate voyagers live wlien they go ahroad?" His Honour asked. Mr Johnstone said tliat they would fetay in places at least as .comfortable as the Great Western hotel s._ When summing up later His Honour said that it had been argued that.it cost less to take a trip abroad than to remain at home in New Zealand. If that were so it would shortly he that most New Zealanders 'who _ had private incomes would be living abroad. He was not prepared to accept that iargmnent. nI must adopt my ora view of the cost of travelling," he said. "In my view it costs move to go abroad and enjoy youi-self than it does to live quietly in New Zealand."
