Nation, of Pourerere, and Mrs T. W. Lewis, of Hastings, are at present on a Tisit to Wellington. Mr S. M. Wilson. of the staff of the Union Bank, Waipukurau, resumecl dutv to-day after having been on sick leave, Canon. and^Mrs W. M. Butterfield are visiting Napier, tbe former to attend the annual session of the Waiapu Sj*nod. Miss Eden Macfarlane. of Napier, who has been the guest of her sister, j\lrs H. D: Crisp, of Gisborne, has returned home. Mr and Mrs Ken Deighton, of JTarton, who liave been on a holiday visit to the Wairoa district, left for their home on Wednesday. Sir George Clifford is at present a patient at tlie Christchurch Hospital, and his condition is causing his relatives great anxiety. Mr J. Fletcher, of Onga Onga was taken to the Waipukurau Hospital on Sunday night and operated 011 immediately for appendicitis. Mr C. O. Morse has heen reappointed to the Napier Technical School Board as the Hawke's Bay Employers' Association's representative. Admiral Sir. Rudolf Bentinclc has heen placed on the retired list at his own request, and Vice-Admiral Sir Hugh Watson is promoted to Admiral. Mrs Ben Ireland, of Blackburn, Onga Onga, wlio bad a slight stroke in tlie left side of her face, was conveyecl to the Waipukurau Hospital on Monday. Mr R. S. Brittain, formerly of the Dannevirke hranch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been promoted from the New Plymouth hranch to the inspector's office in Wellington. Mr and Mrs F. W. C'ollins, for a considerable numher of years residents of Napier, but now of Waikanae, are at present visiting Napier renewing old acquaintionships. Mr and Mrs E. A. J. Elliott, "Glenelg," Porangahau road, Waipukurau, who have been on a holiday, embracing Sydney, Melbourne, Katoomba and Ballarat, returned home on Wednesday. Tlie Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the Opposition, lias advised the Wairoa Power Board that he will attend the official opening of the Waikaremoana hydro-electric works at Tuai on November 20. Mr C. H. Tidswell, of Tangitere, Wairoa, wlio broke his leg a few weeks' ago tlirougli being thrown from his horse and is at present in tlie Cook County Hospital, is expected home shortly from Gisborne. Mr Noel T. Woods and Mr James Campbell Dakin have been chosen by tlie professorial board of tbe University of Otago to be tlie Otago candidates for the Rhodes scbolarsliips. Both are arts students, born in the Otago province, and intend to complete their B.A. degrees this y$ar. Mr Woous is 21 and Mr Dakin 20. Mr and Mrs A. D. McLeod, of Martinborough, returned to London recently after an extensive tour of England, Scotland and Ireland. They have left for the Continent to spend a month hefore their return journey to New Zealand, which will he via Suez and Australia. Mr McLeod' s health has been very greatly henefited hy the change. Miss Rosemary Rees, the 'New Zeaiand novelist, went to New Yorlc a few montlis ago, partlv oil holiday and partly to see what the American Metropolis miglit have to offer her. She libped to arrange/foi- tlie puhlication in the United States. of some of her novels, and this anticipation has come to he a reality. Miss Rees lias j been helping to make a "talkie." and in this connection tliere are good prospects ahead. Her first appearanee has been in a ismall part only, but it was a markecl success.
