UNEMPLOYMENT.
"FED UP."
(To the Editor).
Sir, — I have heard about and read in the daily papers of the unemployment that has been rife' during the year right throughout the country. Ifc was nofc till a foi'tnight ago, when I became one of the unemployed, that I realised to the full what it really meant. At first I felt that it would^ be comparatively easy for me to eh-% tain a position as I was used to domg all manner of'work, but after my first clay's anxious search around the town . I conld see it wasn't going to be as easv as I imagined. I perservered day after day and, like adrowningman, clutched at a straw. I wonlcl folloiv up the most slender clues that might mean the end of the heartbreaking search. I -would wait for lmurs to see someone who might he aole to put work in mv way and then be told curtly tliat there was "nothing doing." How callous and indifferent they^ all seemed. Little did I think when I went away to do my bit in 1914 that I would live to he treated like this. ■ Now 'the best I can hope for is a job at ; Waikaremoana at 14s per day, wkere one might average £3 10s per week. Deduct from that 26s per week for hoard at the job, also 25s for transporfc there, and wlien the 30s per week house rent is paid, enough might he left to keep one member of my family decently. — I am, etc.,
