Christopher Hampton, hotel licensee, Wimbledon, was charged at the Waipukurau Court with selliim liquor after hours on Augu^t 3i. Cnarges of exposing liquor for sale, and opening premises for the sale of liquor after hours, were also preferred. JDefendant pleaded guilty to the first chaa-ge and the others wero withdrawn. The Magistrate in imposing a fine. 6 aid tbat the saying that an Englishman's home is his castle, did not apply to a public house, which was expected to he eonducted in a satisfactory manner and in etrict : accordance with the law. It should not be neeessary for a- constable to give a hotel his attention. However, a noniinal penalty only would be imposed. Defendant was convicted and fined £5 on the first charge, and ordered to pay costs, 14s. A eonvictiou was entered > only op the second charge. The Magistrate issued a warning tbat defendant would be well advised to in future conduct his hotel in accordance with the requirements of the Licensing Act. Ernest Henry Herbert, farmer, Wimbledon, Evan Halstead Morgans and Huia, Wannacott, laboujrer, Akitio, were charged witb being found on licensed premises. Herbert was convicted and fined £1 and costs amounting to 10s, Morgans and Wannacott were convicted and fined £2 and costs totalling 14s 2d. ""* - 1 »
