AVELLINGTON, Last night. _ Speaking in the Legislativ6 Council on the third reading of the Marriage Aniendment Bill pevmitting marriage with a deceased' s wife niece or a deceased husband's nephew, Sir Francis Bell entered a protest, as it would rreate illegitimates in other parts of the Empire. He eontended that there should he uniforniity in the marriage laws throughout the Empire. This was supported hy tlie Hon. T. H. Weston. The Hon. J. Barr contested the argnment, declaring that New Zealand was a separate entity and we should 11 ot wait till Great Britain took action tc rectify a wrong in the law. The Hoin AV. Earnshaw mhved that the hill he read the third time tliree months hence, but this was lost by 22 to 23. The bill was passed without aniendment.
