The Bishop called upon the general secretary, the A'en. Archdeacon J. B. Brocklehurst, to call the roll, after whieli .Merhecki's office of the Hoty Comniunion was sung. The Rev. Canon MacLean was tlie celebrant, and was assistcd by Canon Artliur AVillianis (Epistoller) and Canon Clarke (Gospeller). The Rev. A. F. Hall preached the sermon, his text being St. dohn 3.30, "He must increase, but I must deerease." The annual synod was opened by the Right A7en. -Dr. AV. "VV. Sedgwick, Bishop of AA'aiapu, -yesterday afternoon in the new Synod Hall. There was a very large attendance of the general public to hear tlie Bishop's address The address was heantiiy applauded at manv points. and was notable for the nianuer in which the great difficulties fncing the Cliurch today were dealt with. , THE BISHOP-ELECT. The hours of meeting were fixed as 2.30 to 3.30 p.m. and 7.30 to 9.45 p.m. Mr Kibhlewhite was appointed chairman of committee, tho Rev. AV. T. Drake clerical secretary, and" Mr H. R. Clark lay secretary. Mr A. E. Turner AA'illiams moved: "That this synod desires to impress on parisbes the iinportance of loyally supporting the Pension Board in its fire insurance business." hlr Williams pointecl out that the board's fund was in a very sound position owing to the security of re-insur-ance. -Capital was increasing, 'and accrued profits were to' he devoted to pensions funds, the widows' and orplians' fund, and the clergy sick fund and it was therefore in the hest interests of parishes to support thc church's. scheme.

The motion was earried unanimously. It ivas also dceided to amend tbe rules in tiie No. 1 and No. 2 pension funds in order that pensions may be paid to clergvmen who have retired at Ihe age of 65, and to enable the board to pay pensions for children of deeeased clergy men up to the age of 16 years. „ The A^en. Archdeacon Williams, Messrs IT. Holderness, A. E. Turner AA'illiams, J. P. AA'illiam.son and R. E. H. Pilson were appointed a committee to deal with the excliange and sale of certain properties held bv the AV aiapu Board of Diocesan Trustees. A select committee was set up to dcal with the question of a retiring allowanee to the Biship. The synod went into committee to eonsider the missionary quota for the ensuing year. In order to relieve tlie Nelson Diocese from the necessity of raising its budget for missions, a task rendered impossible hecause of the damage and loss eaused by tlie recent earthquake, the Diocese of Waiapu took over an extra quota of £90. making the tota.1 assessment £2790. The amount raised last year was £3223 Us Bd. or £525 11s 8d in excess of budget expectations.
