NEW RAILWAY STATION
Per Press Association.
EIVE-STOREY BUILDING AT AVEDLINGTON TERMINUS. ' GOVERNMENT DECISION AFTER 20 YEARS.
vv JirJjjjiist.TjLUiN , lins day. Some finality appears to have been reached at_ last over the new railway station which has been in the air for the last 20 years. The Government has definitely approved of the Bunny street site and has declined the Mayor's proposal to set up a commis- 1 sion to eonsider the establishment of a goods yard at Petone, instead of the citv. Plans for the structnre show a fivestorev steel frame building, 360 feet' by 340, which will inelude accommodation -for tlie head office. I'he present building oeeupied by the staff will be take® over for otlier'Government offiecs, now scattered about the city. There will also be restaurants and shops, in fact all the aecommodation of a first-class hotel, except bedrooms. In reply to the Mayor, the Minister of Railways says it is not desirahle or economical to shift the goods yard to Petone on account of the cost and inconyenience of working. The Mayor's principal point was that" the yai'ds wonlcl occupy a large space which was mueh more valuable ' for commercial purposes considering how little flat ground there is in AVellingdon. Tbe Minisier states that there will be left over some eight acres available for such purposes, and possibly a furtlier area, of an extent not, stated, at the far end of the hlock now being reclaimed. At present this is all that can be considered. Tbere will also he provision for train loops, which was another question raised hy the Mayor.
