JOITINGS DAY BY DAY.
The layers of odds in Australia inust have had a severe blotv administered to them on Saturdav, when the ivellbacked High Syce succeeded in the Caulfield Cup. He had for sonie time been one of the fancied competitors ior the race, and after he scored in tlie October Stakes, one mile, iveight-for-age, at Flemington on the 5th cf the nionth, lie was made a still warmer selection for the 1 .1 mile event that vas decided 011 Saturdav. * ^ * He is a five-vear-old entire son of Highfield and Concise, being owned by Alrs L. B. Buxton, lvho also has another liigh-class performer. in Highland, carrying her racing livery. High Syce is engaged in tlie Melbourne Cup, in irliicli bis original impost was 9st 311>, but his victory in the Caulfield Cup has increased that poundage to 9st 111b, the prohability being tliat he will be relieved of his engagements in the big iwo-mile liandicap at Flemington next month. jjc ^ High Syce had 9st 41b in the Caulfield Cup. Amounis, who finished in secoud place, allowed him a pound. * ¥ * Admitted that it was a good load to carry over a mile and a half, still a greater poundage than the 9st 41b tliat Higli Syce had on his back was borne by two previous winners of the Caulfield Cup, the record in the weight direction in the race being lield by Mnnfred, who carried 9st 61b successfullv in the contest three years back, while, in the preceding season, Purser had 9st olb up wlien tlie award was secured by him. ¥ V Paris carried tlie same weight as High Syce wlien he gained his second Caulfield Cup win in 1S9-1. , ¥ ¥ ¥ High Syce has been continuously racing since he was a two-year-old, and right along that troil since then has been in winning vein, the most of his victories having been gained in Queensland, where he won, in addition to many other events, the Queensland Guineas, Derby, St. Leger and Royal Stokes. •j: ¥ ¥ In addition to being rovally supported for the win ou Saturday, he was also coupled with the majoritv of those presumed to have favourable prospects in the Melbourne Cup. ft can thei'efore be observed that the pencillers operating 111 Australia have got a hard proposition in front of tliem fo successfully emerge from business over the double, Oau ifield and Melbourne Cups. * * * . Those who got in early in their efforts to pick the two cup winners would doubtless have had good odds about the double, for good prices early in the piece are ahvays forthcoming. To give an instance of tbis I may add that on the 17th ot last month the douhle, Epsom and " Metropolitan double, Nightmarch and Loquacious was quotecl at -30-3 to 1. * * * ' Clarendon is assuredly proving that the good opiuions formed of his capabilites as a youngster were based on solid grounds, as the son of _ Psychology and Pendant has, in his last three attempts, scored twice and oc-c-upied the runner-up's position in his other essav. A first and a second on the "one day, which were registered at ^1 a'sfevton on -Saturday,. was certainly convnicin'g. He is engaged in the October Handichp, six furlongs, at Trentham on Saturdav, in which he was bandicapped at _8 stone. Tbat impost will now he increased to 8st 51b for his win at Masterton. a * * jRabbi, winner of the Masterton liandicap on Saturday, is engaged in the New Zealand Cup at 7st 21b. He had five pounds more than that to cari'y last weelc. His success, however, does not adcl to his weight for the two-niile event at Riccarton next month. . *
-A V Relation, whose supporters obtained a good return from the machine in consequenee of his scoring in the first clivision of the Maiden Stakes, at Masterton, is a three-year-old gelding hy Chief Puler — Imagmntion, who last season, in bis solitery effort, failed to gnin a position.
