Sir Hugh Clifford, Governor and Commonder-in-Cliief of the Straits Settlement, and High Commissioner for the -Malay States, has asked permission to resign from his office 011 account of tlie 'ilWiealth of Lady Clifford, and he is returning with her to England, Tlie followiug telegram has been sent hv tlie Colonial Secretary to Sir Hugh Clifford "I am commanded by His Majesty the King to inform j'ou that he accepts your resignation and is much distressed. to hear tlie reason which has necessitated it. Tlie King much appreeiates tlie long. and 'distinguished service whiclr you have reudered to the Kmpire."
