New Zealand Horses Do Well WIN FOR HIGH SYCE.

MELBOURNE, Oct. 20. There was fine weather and an enonnous attendance at tlie Caulfield races. Few New Zealanders ivere present. Gudroon led always in the Oby Hurdles and won comfortably. He failed badly 011 Wednesday. The trainer, J. H. Davis, also has Yersatile. First Legion had a comfortable victory in the Nursery. He has had two wins and a fourtli from three starts. He cost 300 guineas as a vearling. Namera, the hero of many steeple battles, was last early in the race, but finished well aud won the Wyuna Steeples in tlie last stride. He won tlie National Steeple 1*11 1928 and was also second and third in that race in earlier seasons. s There was tremendous interest in the Cup. Higli Syce was never further back than seventh. He took tliird place at the tuni and avoii brilliantly. Amounis came liome fast, but Avas 110 match for the Avinner of the day. Prince A'al had every chance, the same as Taislio. The Avinner is owned by Mrs Buxton, tlie first lady to capture the race since 1894. Trainer Holt and Jockey Duncan won last year, with Maple. This is High Syce's tliivd suceessive win this season. The Avinner comes from Queensland, and is tlie first horse from that part to Avin the race since Ben Holt in 1886. It was a^popnlar victory. Black Duchess and Harbinger early made _ the pace from Taisho, Catkin, Temoin, High Syce and Prince Viol, Avith Amounis, Paquito and Ethelton lost. At the six furlongs Black Duchess led by a length from Taisho, closely folloAved by Perception, Prince Viol ancl High Syce, Avith Amounis improving his position. Near the three furlongs Taisho led and showed the Avay to the straiglit from Prince Viol, High Syce and Amounis. High Syce led at the distance and won brilliantly by two lengtlis, third one and a half lengtlis away. Taisho Avas fourtli, then Ethelton.
