THE WORLD OF MUSIC
(By "B Natural"),
The Napier* musical event of the week was a pianoforte recital given by tbe students of Miss Rose Briasco on Tuesday evening. The programme was well chosen, ranging from light, dainty airi of modern composers to the more majestic music of Chopiii. The students showed careful study, and the whole recital was mucli appreciated by those present. The very pleasing violin solos rendei'ed bv Miss Anna Briasco added variety aiid interest to the entertainment. * * * Gaul's sacred Cantata, "Ruth," was given on Thursdav evening by the choir of Trinity Church, and I hear that tlie performance was a splendid one. The .choir, answering well. to tlie baton of Mr Dennis Johns, displayed good light and shade in their work, while the soloists rendered their parts with feeling and expression. * * * . When will some of our wool kinsjs or business magnates hear the feeble crv of music in tliis country for support? Europe and America, Austraha and South Africa, all realise that man cannot live by bread alone, and that tlie tbin«2s of tbe spirit are stimulated and uplifted by tlie Divine Art of Music, wbich sliould not be expected to pay its way ara- niore than our scliools and art galleries are expected to do. We are too materialistic .in this Dominion. * * A recentlv discovered "Sonata. per Violino e Camhalo di J. vS. Bach" is nmong the works of the master found in Germanv. according to the Signale. The manuscript includes tlie six pages of the Sonata and a vivacious Praelu(lium. two pages long, also written bv Bacb's liand. Tbe newly discovered composition' was introduced to tbe German nublic on June 8 at tbe seventeenth Bacb Festival in Leipzig.
