AUCKLAND, Tbis day. Commenting on a case referred ta tbe Return ed Soldiers' Rebabilitation! Commission in wliich a pension. bad • been stopped as the result of allega^ tions concerning tbe recipient's modef of life. tbe cbairman, Mr J. S. Barton, said that in such cases an important principle was involved. He said tbat it was quite possible! tbat a man living away from his wife ancl witb another woman miglit possibly be a better 'man and citizeji iti many respects than one wbo observing conven tions. However, society, wliich paid the money to subsidise tliese men, bad tbe riglit to draw a line and assert tbat any departure from tbat line would cleijar a man from receiving the pension. Tbe question tliat _ arose wbeit boarcls were given judicial powers iH tbis respect was where tbe line sliould. be drawn. YVlierever it was drawn it was certain tliat bardsbip wonld fall on sonieone. The cbairman said tbat tbe commission woulcl forward on particulaf® of tbe case in point so far as it cofl» cerned tlie principal involved.
