Sir John Cockburn, agcd 79 years, died in Londan yesterdav. Deceased settlecl in South Australia in 1875. lie was a member of the Legislativo Assembly for Burra in 1884 and for Mt. Barker in 1887. H© was Minister of Education from 1885 to 1887 and I Premier in 1889-90. Subsequently he became Agent-General for South Australia. Mr W. H. L. Williams, of Waipukurau, was, at the aimual communication of tJie Masonio Grand Lodge of New Zealand in Auckland, appointed to tlie position of an assistnnt grand director of ceremonies. Mr W. Dobson, of Dannevirke, was elected to the board of general purposes, and Mr L. Wood, of Napier, to tbe board of henevolence. Mr W. H Pickett, of Dannevirke, was elected a grand steward. ]Mr J. J. Clark, of Dunedin, wks installed a« the Grand Master for New Zealand at the annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Auckland last night. Dr. W. E. Redman (Blenheim) was invested as Doputy Grand Master, and the Provinciai Grand Masters of last year were reappointed except tliat Mr J. Morling, of Napier, took the place .of tbe late Mr J. W. Ritcbie for Hawke's Bay. Other senior officers. appointed and invested were : Senior Grand Warden, Mr O. E. Dutton (Auckland) ; Junior Grand Warden, Mr G. F. Allen (Christchurch) ; Grand Lecturers, Rev. A. M. Niblock (Auckland), Jfr 0. C. Mazengarb (Wellington) ; Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, Mr S. S. Allen (Samoa), Rev. E. L. Harvie (Auckland), Mr H. II. Edwards (Nelson and Marlborough), Mr F. Symes (Ruapehu). Lieut. R. D. Allan has been appointed by the Auckland Aero Club to the position of its instructor in place of Major G. A. C. Cowper, who has resigned to join a private company. Lieutenant Allan has been recently employed as assistant instructor to the Hawke's Bay Aero Club and the Auckland Club is fortunate in acquiring one so experienced in the instructing of pupils. Born in New Zealand, Lieutenant Allan left for England when quite a lad and at the outbreak of the war joined up with the Royal Air Force. Soon after this he was appointed instructor to one of the flying schools at Home for the purpose of preparing recruits for the front, and in this capacity was more than 500 hours in the air. He commenced his duties at the Mangere Airdrome on Saturday and yesterday left for Dargaville in one of the Moth planes with Dr. Kenneth Mackenssie, who was going north to attend a patient.
Mr Alfred Carter, of _ Whangarei, oue of the best known residents of the north. died on Monday at the age of 71 years. Tlie deceased gentleman was one of the first clerks of the Hikurangi Town Board. and was a moniher of a family that was amongst tlie first to eommetiee farming in tliat district. With tlie discovery of coa! in the locality the faniilv hecame prosperous, liaving mineral rights ovor the property wliere some of the most valuablo lodes were discovered. The Carters also introduced some of tlie first pecligreo eattle into tlie North, their beef Shortliorns being recognised as the best in the district. About 20 years ago Mr Alfred Carter moved to Kamo, wliere he estahlished an agency and eonnnission business, l'etiring to Whangarei about seven years later. Mr Carter was passionately fond of rnusic, and belonged to several of the early church choirs, as well as orchestral societies. He was a memher of the "Whangarei Hospital Board for several years and was elected in 1919 to the Borough Council. He was a very early memher of the Whangarei Bowling Club, and a keen player. Mr Carter married twice. He is survived by his wife, four sons aud two daUgbters. The sons are Messrs Ernest Carter (Auckland), Vivian Carter (Kauri), Alfred Carter. (Whangarei), and Stauley Carter (Morrinsville). The daughters "are Mesdames Bates (Napier) and Turnar (Kauri). Mr R. M. Carter, of Mount Eden. is a stepson. There are 20 grandchildren.
