LONDON, Dec. 2. Tbe Washington newspaper AA'asbington Rost editnrially declares tbat Comamnder Byrd's polar fligbt bas | strengthened tbe United States' claim on tbe Antaretie. Tt says tbe British claims thereto are based 011 ruothing but impudence and effrontery. Tt is pointed out tbat Lieutenant AAilkes, U.S. Nav.v, discovered tlie Antaretie in December, 1832, whcreas Captain Ross did not see land prior to 1810. Tbe newspaper eontends tbat Byrd's expedition is more practical. "He bas discovered new lands and- claimed tbem and oceupied tbem for tlie United States.",
