Father Monaghan is a native of bydnev. He received bis secondary education at St. Patrick's College, \Velnngton, and studied for the pnesthood at Greenmeadows, Napier. He was ordaincd at the Basilica m 1911. He then veturned to Australia, and after a sliort period i at St. Patrick s, C'burcli Hill, was appointed to the statt of the Marist Apostolic , School, Montbell Hunter' s Hill, and then to Blessed ' Chanel's Seminary, Mittagong. While cugaged at these institutions Fatlier Monaghan studied at Sydney Universitv, and he took his M.A. degree in 1920. In 1924 Father Monaghan returned to New Zealand, and since 1925 he has been vice-rector of St. Bede's. He is regarded as one of tlie loading educ.utionists of Ihe Marist Orderln Australia and New Zealand.
