YEAR'S BUILDING TOTALS REACH £165,992. FIGURES OF INTEREST. Duying the year just ended 314building permits wea-e issued by the Hastings Borough Council's building inspector, the worlcs carried out during the 12 months from January 1, 1929, to December 31, 1929, being valued at £169,992. This figure gives a cogent idea of the colossal amount of building activity that is proceedjng in Hastings at present, demonstratTng the faith of the business community in tiie future of this progressive centre. Topping the list by a wid© margin as far as value is concerned is the work proeeeding in the erection of the warehouse and show room accommodation for the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Co-operative Association. which, when completed at a eost of £30,000 will be one of the handsomest structures of i1s kind in the Dominion and a distiuctive nddition to the town's arclii-tf-ctural beauties. New warehouse and office accommodation is also being built to tbe order of Murray, Roberts and Co.. at a cost of £5500. The expansion of trade geuerally in the town area is illustrated by tlie erection of a block of sbops at a cost of £7700. wliile the sum of £4761 was expended by Hastings tradespeople during the year upon alterations to exisL'ng premises. Additions to the Pacific Hotel cost £6500. During tlie year no less than 111 new dwellings were erected in the residential areas. at a total cost in the vicinity of £87,000. while additions to dwellings cost £5902. The sum of £2100 was expended in the ei'ection of tlie new Salvation Army Hall, wliile further additions to the Hastings High School ran into £2480.
