THE TOTE FIGURES
ANALYSIS OF HOLIDAY RACING. MOST MEETINGS SHOW INCREASE IN 1NYESTMENTS. OVER A MILLION. An analysis of the holiday racing figures show that people were not uxxwilling to invest on the totalisator during the holidays. Of four meetings held at Clxristmas, tliree slxowed incx-eases in tote figures when compared with last year, the only one xix which the figures were down on last year being Taranaki, which was £6339 hehind. Taken as a whole, however, the money put through the totalisator at the Clxristmas meetings this year was £10.211 xxxore than at the same gatherings last year. Nine meetings over the New Year showed inoreases in five cases (Auckland, Hastings, "Wairarapa. Greymouth and Dunedin), with deci'eases in fonr cases (Marton, Stratford, Wyndham, and New Plyixxouth) Tn all there was £56,677 more put on the tote at the Nexv Year meetings this year than at tlm same meetings last year. A study of tbe figures slmws that two Taranaki meetings (New Plymouth and Stratford) and two Southland meptino-.s nVyndham na,| Invercargill) suffered decreases. Whether that is due to a lessening in the nopularitv of racing or a deorease in the snending power of the_ neopl© of those districts cannnt b° said. Both Hawb-e's Bav meetings (Hastings and Waipnknrau) showed inoreases. as did Auckland. Manawata . 4anrf Wairarapa.
