EXPANSION OF TRADE. DIRECT SHIPMENT OF PRODUCE.
NEW PLYMOUTH. This day. The overseas trade returns for the Port of New Plymouth for 1929 sbow ; an inc-rease of 8505 tons eompared , with tbe previous, year. Tliere was a 1 deorease of 4486 tons in exports over- | seas, but this was more fban balanced , by tbe increase in imports, which ex1 eeeded tbe previous year's total by 1 14.079 tons. Butter exports increased | by 33,530 boxes and cheese by 3Q40 1 cratss. ; The numbcr of overseas vessels | working the port was 71, which was 1 six more tlian in the previous year,' ; and represented 55,424 tons gross. The year was the. first in the history 1 of the port in which the total over- ; seas cai'go handled amounted to more | tban 100,000 tons, It exceeded that 1 figure b.y 8471 tons. In the previous ' year the total just fell short of 100,000 ' tons. Overseas imports reached the ' recoi'd figure of 74,115 tons, which rei presents a substantial increase on the ' total for 1928. which was 13,079. I An interesting feature of the past , shipping season was the steady in- ' crease in the number of direct ship- | ment.s of dairy produce from New Ply- , mouth. Of 41 shipments of produce 1 from tlie Moturoa stores onl.y five were | by transhipment tbrough Wellington.
