NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHTPS. PROGRESS MADE IX SP1TE* OF RAIN.
"WANGANUI. Last niglit. Heavv rainstonns and a driving wind caused a pot.sponement of play in tlie final stages of tlie Nortli Tsland lawn tennis championships at the "Wanganui Club's eourts. A few matches were played on Saturday morning, hut the courts were not busv again until lato in the week-end, wlicn a start was made with tlie finals of the men's and women' s doubles. The semi-finals of the ladies' oliampionship singles, played on Saturday morliing, provided two surprises, Mrs Adnms defeatiug Miss rivers, and Miss Xioliolls defeatiug A 1 us Melody, hot'h winning in two set matches. Mrs Adams eoimncneod poovly and was down 3 — 1. but she soon gcft on to her game and 3Miss Myers was not afc home on ihe lieavy courts and was also troubled with ihe perfcct icngth shots to her baelc liand. Tn the sccond set Miss Myers was o(f her drive and -Mrs Adams liad no diffieultv in finishing 6—2. M iss Nidioils Avon casily from Mrs IMelodv, ihe latter not uroduring the form sh© had shown earlier iu tlio tournament. Miss Nicholls' driving was perfeet and Mrs Melody was frequcntiy out of court position. Angus and I.auipe were superior to Steadinau and C'harters wlieu they met in tho semi-final.s of ihe men's ehampiorsliip doubles. Tlie ioriner pair eornbined bettor tlian on tlie previous' dav and played aggressively from the riet, sinasliing and volloying with. accuracy. Results: — Ladies' Siimles. -Smni-finals: Mrs Adams beat Miss Myers 7 — 5. 0 — 2; Miss Nicholls beat Mrs Mclodv, 6 — 4, 6 — 0. Men's Doubles. — Angus and Lnmpe beat Stcadman and C'harters, 6—3, 6—3.
