FIRE AT KARAMU

LARGE HOUSE DESTROYED. BURNT TO GROUND. Passengers to Hastings this morning by the express train noticed heavy columns of smoke coming from a house in the Karamu settlement, near the Karamu railway bridge. Further irtvestigation revealed the fact that the residence of Mr Rangi Otene was on fire, and on account of the absence of any efficient fire fighting appliances the house and its contents were quickly destroyed, the place being burned to the ground. "Willing help was rendered by neighhours but this was of no avail. The house was a fairly large one, but it is not known if it was covered in any way by insurances. Mr Otene is at present in the Napier Hospital.
