JOTTINGS DAY BY DAY.
In adclition to Xloepai Mrs A. Gilmore, of Dannevirke, has Taranto in vvork, the latter gelding having recently heen acquired hy her. He has not done much this season for he has only been seen out in a 'couple of efforts, the result being, a second placing. It was a good display, liowever, fqr he w'as only silenced by half a heaa by Glenrowan in the Woolston Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting. * * * Mr C. Crosse, of Weber, has decided to rest Adept for a time as the filly is suffering from joint trouble. It is aiticipated, however, that the matter will yield to rest and treatment. She is one of the Chief ltuler clan, having been "got" by that sire from Adroit, by Field Battery — Trix, 'by Seaton Delaval — Sunbeam, facts that illustrate that Adept is produced the right way. * * * It is pleasant to state that the late meeting of the Napier Park Racing Ciub turned out a suecess. financially. There seems to be justification for the presumption that it would have been more so had the climatic conditions been more propitious. # * * From the racing point of view, the meeting was a great success, as the class of competitor was of a liigh standard, generally speaking, while the finishes m the major number of instances were strenuous efforts for supremacy. * * * That the essays of the equines were genuine throughout was borne out by tlie fa-ct that in no case was "please explaiu" tabled by those in cqntrol of the gathering. * * * Ma- P. F. Wall, of Hatuma, owner'breeeder of Kaiti, Ivaihoro, Souchong, Alliance aird others, is leaving the Dominion on the first of next month on a holiday jaunt to England. He will he absent from _ the coutry for seven months, hut during his absence his representatives will still continue_ to carry his racing uniform. He will be accompanied by Mrs Wall and family. * * * Since his efforts at Dannevirke, Souchong, the two-year-old ' halfbrother hy Arausio to Kaihoro and Kaiti, has heen showing that his essays have not been at all deterimental to him, and it would appear as if, when the youngster makes his next appearance, satisfactory results will accrue. * * . * Mrs M. A. Perry has given the name of Gold Pit to the rising two-year-old filly hy Cockpit — Gold Bound. The youngster is a half-sistex* to Duo and Otuward Boxxnd. She has_ also bestowed the appellation of Poi Girl to _a rising two-year-old daughter of Cockpit and Huia Girl, who is consequexxtly a half-sister to Tea Bell and Mori. ^ ❖ * . The Waipukxxrau Jockey Cluh issued the _ prbgramme for . their Autumn meeting to be lield as usual on Easter Monday. As was the case last season, £1550 is to he distributed in stakes, the principal event heing the Waipukurau Cxxp of 300 sovs., £270 in specxe aixd a silver cxxp of the valxxe of £30, the 'trophy having been donated by Mr W. J. Craig, of Takapau. * , * * Three of tlxe events, the Hatuma, Purimu and Hack Haxidicaps, which are confined to hacks, liav.e been each endowed to. the ex'tent of £200 each, another £200 stake being the Flyxng Handicap. The Maiden Race, Orxngx and Ladies' Handicap have each £150 allotted to thenx. a * *
In the . case of the latter yace the prizes are ixx trophies, a silver coffee service for the ownex- of the winxiei', and novelties in the shape of . cantens of cutlery to the ownex-s of the second and tbird horses, who have to he nominated by ladies and ridden hy amateur jockeys. ^ ^ ^ Fitzquex, the younger full-brother to Disranlc (Lord Quex— Morganatic), who is under tlie tuition of J. Sullivan at Woodville, is said to he doingi good work on tko tost-out at *V occivillo. Fitzquex was, like his hrother^ hred at Porangahau by Mr J. Wliite, who has leased him to Ihe .Waipawa owner, Mr T W. Wills. * * * Mr C. W. Merrylees, who is now located at the quarters at Hastings at one time occupxed by Mrs A. McDonald, may ixx the xxear fnture have Golden Shadow under his control. The gelding is at presexxt uxxder the guidance of A. C. Plxxmmer, at Dannevirke. * * . * France's leading stallioxx of last year was the 20-year-old Berleur, whose progeny put together £19,159 in prize-xxxoney. * JfS * This suxn is srnall compared with Magpie's Australiau figures of £38,596 last seasoxx, and xvas exceeded by four other sires in Australia — Rossendale, Seremond, Valais and Saltash. * * * . It is small also when compared with the New Zealand-owxxed Nightraid, xvho, ixi less than half the season, by the aid of two of his sons, captured the plums of the rich stakes in Australiai, * * * So far this season the sons and daughters of Cliief Ruler have won 56 races, with stakes for minor placings. In addition the sum to the credit of his "gets" in the Dominion has reached the bulky sum 'of _ £15,725, and the imported English sire liolds the top notch in the suecessful stallion list. * . * * Last season _ Chief Ruler was in eighth place with his sons' and daughters' winnings at £i0,067. * * * Paper Money, whd led the way in fche list last season with £22,067, _ is now in second place to Chief Ruler with £9506 to his credit. * * * l. Wilson, in -charge of My Own and Jenny Diver, left Hastings this morning for Trentham.
