Basketball at Wairoa. The game of baskethall, which "caught on" so well last year in Wairoa, will he well to the forefront for the coining season. The game is mostly confined to the vairious schools in the district and already there is evidence of a larger, mrmber of teams" participating. Farewell Function, Prior to his departure for Feilding, on transfer, Mr Allan Taylor of th? Vyaipukurau branch staff of the Union Bank of Anstralia, was the guest a't a social gathering held by the inemhers of St. Andrew's Bible Class. He was presented hy Mr Jamieson, on behalf of the class, of which he had been a leader,. with a pocket wallet. Rugby Starting Early. The football season for Wairoa will soon be in full swing. An earlier starfi witb the competitions will be made this season tlian that of previons years. Several of the clubs have held their annual meetings and are now getting into practice. Iricreased interest in the game is being shown and there is an encouraging prospect of a Successful year. Hotiligans at Dance. It is reported that a dance held by the Otane Ladies' Basketball Club on Wednesday night last was marred by hooliganism on the part of several yonths said to he from Waipukurau, and also said to be under the influence of alcohol. It is reported that the youths made themselves distinetly objectionable. It is said that one.of them struck an M.G. and that the offendei' may yet" hear more of his action. Hockey at Norsewood. A very enthusiastis meeting of ' the Norsewood Men's Hockey Club • was held, when it was decided to again enter a team in the forthcoming eompetition. Mr 3. Brahazon was nnanimously re-elected club eaptain and Mr K. Ponlsen secretary. The secretary s . report on the club's finances Was satisfactory. It is requested that ruembers this year make an endeavour to turn up to practices regulariy. By so doing a strong team is assured to commence the new season with, as there are a few menibers who show great improvement at the game. Land Sfittiemsnt. It is hoped in Waiptiknrau that the steps now in progress in regard to the purhcase by the Governmeiit of the properties of Messrs A. W. Elliott and L. M. Monckton, comprising 7000 aeres, will lead to the closer settlement of this area, which is situated about six miles distant from the town. An official inspection by land pnrchase officers has already taken place, but a special valuation has yet to be made. C'entral Hawke's Bay stands in special need of being more closeiy settled, a3 the holdings (in the Patangata county particulatly) are in size far in excess ot the Dominion average. Waipukurau Pictures' To-morrow. "Captain Bwagger," which will be screened at tbe Waipnkuratt Theatre to-morrow nigbt, is bright, spirited entertainment. In tbis Itod La Rocque gives one of those_ dashing performances which so intrigue his many admirers. The picture_ is exceilently staged and bas an original Stoiy that is wittily titled. In his acting as Drummond, Rod La Rocque giyes a portrayal that equals his "Brigadier Gerard" and his performance in "The CruiSe of Jasper B." By combining gallantry with aUdacity _'in Just the nght proportion he carries all before him and succeeds in giving a displav that is entertaining. in itself. Fraser presided over a large attendance. Ihe annual report and balance slxeet was read anJ adopted. In moving, the adoption of same', the chairman and the Rev. J. D. Grocott spoke in glowing terms of its favouirahle nature and the splendid work of the club's secretary (Mr A. Gay) and treasurer (Mr B.
