NEW AMERICAN STATION

SHORT-.WAVE CHAKNiM. A _ 5000-watt short-wave broadcasting station, operating under the "call letter's AVBaAU, and designed primarily for relayitfg American programmes for rehroadeasting to Europe, was opened in Philadelphia in January. The^ station _ will- transmit all of the" Columbia Broadcasting System's programmes seut to station -WCAU, the system's outlet,_ and is the second short-w'ave station operating in conjttnction with the netwoi-k. The new station will be "on tlie air" from S a.m. untii midnight daily. Two wave lengths have been' assigned to the station, 9590 kiloc'ycles, or 31.2 tnetres,. -and 6060 kilocycles, whicfl equals 49.5 metres, The "station has been erected in accordanfce with the plans of the Columbia system to institute international programmes effecting a change of entertainment with foreign broadcasters. Signals under special arrangement will be picked up by jthe foreign stations. w.henever possible. and retransmitted for reception in Europe. Negotiations are now under way with broadcasting iuterests in Holland, Germany and England, andv Columbia officials hope to efffict a definite schedule for rebroadcast or programme exchange within tlie next few months. All of the system's programmes sent through WCAU will be simultaneously fcroadcast through W3XAU. Tlius two short-wave stations in the East will transmit the syStem's entertainment on short-wave lengths. W2XE in New York, sister' station of WABO, the Columbia key, transmits all of the system's programmes on a frequency of 6120 kilocycles, or a wave lengti) of 49.02 metres.
