FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. ' DEPUTATION TO MINISTER.
, WELLINGTON, Last night. Plain illustrations of the means adopted by some people to fiout the law which requires fruit and vegetables on top of a . contaiuer, to be a fair sample of wbat. is below were brought before the notice of the acting Prime Minister, the Hon. G, W. Forbes, to-day by a deputatibn representiug fruit and vegetable producers and retailers. Complaint. was made by Mr J. ,W. Ransoin that the presenib system of inspection of fruit and vegetables was totally inadequate. This was. specially ' so in Auckland, where a paid official was employed to protect the retail mterests. . > Members of the deputation showed samples -of vegetables, etc., widely differing in size to support the contention that some producers packed their produce in a dishonest way, displaying the best oh top and inferiorunderneath. t .The Minister said he wonld go -into the matter of inspection immediat'ely, and see how it vtas the present system permittd such a thing, and the way to check- -it. * a
