THREE ACCIDENTS

SATURDAY MISHAPS IN HASTINGS THREE PEOPLE IN HOSPITAL. On Saturday no fewer than tbree accidents occurred in Hastings, and as a result three persons concerned are now inmates of the Napier Hospital. The first was one in which a three-year-old cbild, named Cyril Betley, was run over by his father's car. It appeaxs that the lad's father and mother were just about to drive the car u'p a right-of-way into the residence of the child's grandfatlier, Mr R. Shaw, of Nelson street, when the child ran out in front of the car and was knocked over. AVhen picked u'p he was lying beliind the near off-side wheel. Dr. Johnston was at once sumnioned and sent the bpy to the Napier Hospital, where he is now progressing favourably. It was thought at first that the lad was seriously liurt, but a later examination revealed the fact tliat no bones were, broken and the injuries were of a minor nature. It was, however, a very miraculous escape. 1 BROKEN ANKLE. The second accident occuiTed to a youth named George Clark, of Bridge pa, who was riding a motor cycle along the Maraekakaho road shortly after seven o'clock at night. AVhen passing the residence of Mr Arch. Lowe his machine skidded and he was thrown heavily. His call for help was answered by Mr Lowe, who at once called Dr. Coinrie, and an investigations revealecl that he was suffering from a broken leg at the ankle. He was at once taken to the Napier Hospital, where his condition is reported satisfactorily. A BROKEN ARM. The third niishap befel a small boy, named George O'Leary, a son of Ser-geant-Major O'Leary, of Hastings. It appears that he and another lad were "double-banking" on a push cycle near Paki Paki, and when crossing the railway line the bicycle skidded and overturned, throwing the riders. In the fall ybung O'Leary sustained. a broken arm, which necessitated treatment in . Napier Hospital. He is now reported to be doing well.
