After a recent sporting meeting a Ratekeeper found himself £1 short ip his takings. He could not account for it and the committee, never doubtiflg his honesty, coneluded that in the rush he may liave dropped a £1 note or given away too much in change. It was a surprised gatekeeper when a few days later a man approached him in the street and, after explaining how he had receiyed tickets and in the rush been carried past the gatekeeper had failed to pay for them, tendered a £1 note. The gatekeeper was thankful and lie went to the secretaty and ' paid the missing £1 ivhich had caused' him considerable anxiety. The honesty of hoth men merits being placed on record. The present season has been a wonderfully successful oue all round as far as sports meetings are coneerned. There has been a strong revival of interest in athletics both on the part of competitors and the public, and it may safely he said that never hefore in the history of Hawke's Bay has the sport been of such a high standard as it is to-day. Alinost every sports club is able to report record meetings for this season, and the public mxist have been nlore tban satisfied with the splendid quality of the sport provided, for this atliletic, wood-chopping and sawilig, and horse events have all been large at the various meetings, and it wolild seexn that it will he difficult to go much further in this direetion. However, there is one end-of-seasott meeting whxch always sets a standard of its oxvn, and that is the Easter Saturday xneeting of the Tikokino Sports Clu'b. The sports meetings of this club have gained a much more than local or even provincial reputation, for competitors have in the past b'een attracted from various other parts of the North Island. Since last season the club has spent a considera'ble suxn in improving the track, etc., in the Domain, and competitors will apprecia+e this, and other improvements which have been effected. The pi'ogramme is open, whxch cannot fail to attvaft those in- • c-ted, xn all braUches of sport.
