THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.
The soil is probably t'oo dry for plainting or Sowing just now, but free use of the hoe is necessary to he sure that all germinating weed seeds are killed. Clear away all spent crops ; burn anything that shows signs of disease. All vacant ground should be turned over to let the dry weather sweeten it, and get it ready for planting once the rains come. For Winter use raised beds are the best. A few inches above the ordinary level is sufficient to give a orop an advantage. During the Winter the need seems to be to keep up a supply of nitrogen, and this is best supplied by frequent small doses of nitrate of soda. Keep runner beans elosely picked, and the plants well supplied with moisture. Tomatoes must be sprayed for bligbt and caterpillar. Keep the plants tied up and disbudded. This will long be remem'bered as one of the worst years possible for tomatoes. As soon as the potatoes are ready, lift them. If seed for planting is to he saved, sort them out, and let them lie on the ground for a day or so to dry, then store them in boxes in a light airy frost-free position. Seedling crops should he thinned early to ensure a quiclc, sturdv growth. Stir the soil round the small plants to ensure freedom from weeds.
