GREAT JUMPING
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP DISTANCE BEATEN ' THE TE AUTE MEETING
(Notes by "Spike.")
The outstanding event of the ath*isi ^Teek kas ke.eu the performances ot llnllips, of Waipukurau, in the field events at the Te Aute meeting. • i £ke lon.S iumP he was credited with 22ft. 6in. from scratch, and in the hop, step and jump 45ft. 8-J-in. from scratch. If those distances are correct Hawke's Bay has a champion leaper. Last year NeviJle won the New Zealand championship with a jump of 20ft. 4H n., and this year Barker took the title with 21ft. 7in. Phillips. on his reported figures at Te Aute, could beat either or both of these men. In addition, he would come uncommonly close to winning the triple leap at a national meeting, because last year Rydbeck captured that event with 46ft, 9in., and this year Sullivan won it with 47ft. 4in. Phillips would be less than two feet behind this Iatter mark. Napier and Hastings competitors appeared at the Te Aute meeting and did well, Eddy, of Hastings, winning the 75 yards. 120 yards and the 220 yards, a good day's work. Miss Henry won the ladies' L00 yards for Hastings and Miss Irwin trok the J75 yards, while Phillips wound up 'the day with a fine jump of 22ft. 6in. in the long jump. POINTS TROPWES The Hastings Clnb, like its Napier cc-mate, has now closed its club season and the winners in the points tiophies are now known. In the senior ladies' division Miss G. Symes, perhaps the most promising of the ladies round here now, carries off the Rtisbateh Cup with ease, having scored 24 points durmg the year. How mueh she was ahead of her team 'mates is shown by the iaet that her nearest rival had three points. Gf course this is largely contributed to by the fact that the ttvo best runners in Hastings, Misses fLean and M orton, joined the Napier Club this year and left Miss Syme something of a clear field. Tin the ladies' junior section Miss J. Bees won' the Mary Carberry Cup with 22 points, Miss R. Tong being runnerup with 21 points. The men's events also ereated keen competition, those two _ youth ful athletes, Cameron and Collinge, having a great tussle. In the final count up Canferon wins the Rusbatch Cup with 21 points, Collinge having scored 20. Verry was third with 13 points. The cycling races resnlted in MathiesOn winning the Sanders Cup, with 28 points, McKee being runner-up with 23 points.,' The secondary schoolbbys' events were topped by Apsey, the Hastings
High School champion, who scored lflj points during tlie year in these events. Shakespeare was at the head of the poll in the primary school section wth ir, points. The -440 yards championship for the Newton Cup still has to be decided. LADY CHAMPIONS* Since the N.Z.A.A.A. placed a ladies' championship event on the programme of events at the New Zealand championship meeting no runner has been successful in winning the 100yds. event on two consecutive oceasions ; nor has any runner won the event tw-ice at intervals. The first winner of a New Zealand championship was Miss Phyllis Dawson, of Wellington, Who received a! standard medal. The following year, at Dunedin,' Miss Sybil Swinburne. of Wellington, was successful but. did not receive s medal as it was ruled as a nonChampionship event. Next season, Miss R. Mantan, of Wellington, ran into first plaee at Auckland, and received the medal. in later years Miss Norma Wilson (Gisborne), Miss Martyn (Canterbury) and Miss Kench (Wellington) have been successful, The best time in a championship event is to Miss Kench, who ran 11 l-5secs. at Wanganui. Miss Mantan's run of 11 3-5secs at Auckland is the # next best time recorded. % ifc 4i UNIFORM COSTUME Many and varied .were the runnmg costumes seen at the New Zealand Championships recently held at Wanganui, and most notieeable of all were tbose worn by the lady runners. In the men's sectionj there is a rule defining the running costume that will be allowed on the track; but, seemingly, the ladies are given a free hand. As ii) is now, some runnerii wear skirts and others run in shorts — > perhaps an advantage for the lastmentioned. Some people hold that the correct costume is on the lines worn by the Wellington team. That they were nol utiduly penalised by wearing skirts if proved by Miss Kench winning the 10( yards championship m 11 l-5secs.j equalling the . New Zealand reeord When Miss N. Wilson ran the 100yds, m 11 l-5sees. (26.1.28) she also wori skirts. Still we in Napier are used to see' ing girls runmug in shorts atid no one could suagest that the costumes wortf by the Napier girls are anything bu(j neat and attractive and in conf orauta ,with all the demands of modesty.
