CAR AND CYCLE COLLIDE
SCHOOL M1STRESS APPEARS IN COURT. FAILURE TO GIVE SIGNAL. -A mistress at the Napier Gii'ls' Higb School. Blanche Amy Collett, _ (Mr Lawiy) was charged before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., in the Napier Police Court this morning, with 4'ailing to give a signaf when turxiing a xnotor car to the right, . ■ . Senior-Sergeant Stark said that when driving on the main Clive road, defendant failed to give a signal lndicating her • intention to turn to the right, near the "Waimarama l'oad. As a result she collide*d - with a motor cyclist, who had to be rexnoved to hospital with injuries Frank Mintofi', a yardman, stated tlxat he followed three cars off the tlxe biidge, on his motor cycle. Defendant' s car slowed down as though it was going .to : tuni off to the right. Witness detiided to pass her, hut she suddenly pulled over in front of him without giviiig a signal. Witness was sui*e. he would have seen any signal, as lxe had watched defendant's car for 100 vards. . To the Magistrate, witness said that defendant turoed off the road slightly and then swung across suddenly. She. (lid this evidently to get a wide swxng to take the turn. . To Mr Laxvry, witness admitted that he did not sound his horn before attempting to pass the defendant s carAnother witness, Ernest Willxam Rolander, said that he tyas standing on the road at the time of the misliap. Both the defendant and the motor cyclist were travelling slowly. Defendant turned slightly off the road and then straighb across. Witness was watcbing her closely, but he saw no signal given. Tlxe collision _ occuL'i'ed close to whei'e he was standing Witness told the Magistrate that.he had-to step aside to avoid heing struck by the defendant's car. Florence Mavis Lloyd. who was. also near the scene of the mishap. said that the motor cyclist tried to avoid the car, but could not do so. Witness saw no signal given by the defendant. She did not take her eyes off the car, as she had to cross the road. . The defendant, in evidence, said that she was taking friends- to see a display of flowers on the right of the road. A bns approaclied her and she intendeff turning after it had passed. She looked in the reflector and saw no vehicle behind her. She was going to turn across the road and then back. Witness- declared that she put her hand out. She was in second gear and was travelling at less than 10 miles an hour. Another witness, named Sewell, who was a passenger in the car, said he was positive that . the defendant held out her hand. . _ Defendant was convicted and fined £1, and ordered to pay Coui't _ costs anff witnesses' expenses, amounting to £2 12s 9d.
