THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.
Dig over all vacant ground to prevent weeds, etc., giving a crop of seeds. The ground for tlie earliest crops of potatoes should be prepax-ed now. Potato sets should be placed in boxes and sprouted in readiness for planting. For Winter crops tlie method of sowing on raised beds is much the best, as it allows good drainage and gives a warmer soil. Tlie soil between growing crops should be kept loose eitlier by hoeing oi- forking over. Kumnras can be lifted once they are matured. There is always a danger of' the 'rain causing the tubers to start giowing. Keep asparagus beds free of weeds. Support the tops by running a string and a few stakes round the hed. It is impossible to get good crowns unless the "grass" is allowed to mature. Pumpkins, eto., should be harvested as soon as ready. e Runner beans that have been closely picked and watered are still giving a crop. Sowings of onion seed for Spring planting sliould be made.
