DOG TRIALS AT TE POHUE
HAWKE'S BAY CHAMPIONSHIPS. -J THE JUDGE'S COMMENTS. Mr Alex McGlaslian, of Kereru, judge at tlie Hawke's Bay centre dog trial ebampiousliins lield at Te Pohue, forwards tlie following comments on the sport: — The slieep, lent by tlie Rukanioana Station, were a very nice lot, and suited the work well. Tbey were well handled by tbe men placing them on ihe top of tlie liill, .oiving 6verv worker the same cliance. The ground is not a good one, 'but was tlie best available this year. Possible points in tlie long head were: Heading 17, pulling 17, ring 4, command 12, total 50. This was won by Bruce Douglas' (Wakarara) Speed ; a good run. all tbrough, heading in lmin 35sec, finishing in 6min 23sec, and getting on with the work all the time ; a good dog. Score: 16, 16, 3. 11. Total, 46. F. Tong's (Puketapu) Joe was second. Headed well in lmin. lOsec. ; pull a little fast; ring work was good, but sheep were out twice, but the work was quite good and finished in 9min 50sec. Score : 16, 15, . 3, 11. Total, 45. . . The third prize was won by Alex McKenzie, Olrig, with Doon. Doon headed. well, but nearly crossed under sheep before heading, but made no mistake after sighting sheep, heading in lmin. 20sec., and completing in 8min. 50sec. At the ring the _ sheep got out once', but the wox-k put in was rrood and the score was 15, 15, 3J, 11. Total, 44^. Fourth prize, W. McKinnon's (Te Pohue) Bob. Bob put in quite a good run, heading well in lmin. 40sec. His pull was good, though he let sheep drift away from line a little. His ring work was very good, 'but slow, and time was called before the ring work was completed. Score : 15J, 16, 2-J-, 10. Total, 44. . Other dogs to score well m the long head : — -

Speed came in on his line of cast, a little re-directed, and made a very fair head in lmin. 15sec; lifted fair. Let off line a little in pulling; pegs in 5min. 35sec; first di'ive good; hurdles first try; second drive very good. Got well set at yard, and never gave the sheep a cliance, yarding well in 12min 25sec., a good run. Score: 8, 8, 3*. 4, 3, 6, 8, 10. Total, 50*. Second prize went to F . Tong s (Puketapu) Chief. Chief was a little slack running out heading in lmin. 45sec. Lifted well, and made a nice pull; first drive good; hurdles first try;' second drive very good, only fair stvle at yard ; completed 14min. 38 sec. Scox'e : 7*, 9, 3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 9. Total, 49*.
