EARLY MORNING FIRE

spectaculaH blaze in hastings. large hoijse gtjtted. Ai 3.40 o'clock this morning the Hastings Fire Brigade was called out. to Seddon street, to one of the most spectacular blazes seen in Hastings for a long time. The fire was in an eleven-roomed house owned hy Mr W. Woods .and which had heen divided into two separate houses, one of six and the other of five rooms. The five rooms were unoccupied, bnt the six rooms were occupied by Mr Henry Woods and his family, who, however, were away in Gis'horne and liad not been near the place since Iast Saturday. When the brigade arrived the flames had a good hold in the six-roomed portion which was practically gutted, whilst the remaining part of the house was badly damaged hy smoke and water. Thanks to the good work of the firemen, however, this part of the place was saved from destruction. Some idea of the blaze may be gathered from the fact that the residence of Mr W. Woods, although 25 yards distant, was sevevel.v scorched and had several windows broken by the intense heat. - The house was insured for £650 in the New Zealand Insurance Office, but there was no cover on tbe furniture. The firemen were generously supplied with refreshments by Ma* W, Woods, Mrs Giffney, Gordon road and Mr F. Ashford, Seddon street.
