RETURN OF DESERTER
BACK TO THE ARMY AGAIN. Curious facts were given in evidence at Marylebone Police Court the other day regarding the position of Ernest Regmald White, a gunner at' the Brigade Depot, Royal Artillery, Woolwich. White was charged with being a deserter since Janaury 6. Constable Jones told the magistrate that he received information from White s present unit that he was an ' absentee, and during inquiries he discovered that White was also a deserter from the same unit, he having rejoined on January 1. The magistrate: There must have been some extraordinary mismanagement. _ How could they take the man 011 again when he was a deserter from the same unit ? Constable J ones : As far as I ean gather, he had a little domestie trouble, and when his unit was about to go abroad on draft he decided to stay behind t-o see the trouble tbrough. He missed the d-raft, and being unable to face his return, decided to rejoin. He did so under the name of Robert Sweetland, and was accepted. "I think he was recognised later." added tho
"Yes, I should think so," said the magistrate. White was remanded for an escort.
