A Cold Snap. , Wintry conditions pfevailed at "Waipukurau yosterday, the day being very cold throughout. / Shooting season Opens. Tlie duck shooting opened at Waipukurau to-day, under good conditions so far as shooting Avas concerned, the weather being showery. Good bags were reported. Herbertville Householders. The following gentlemen were elected menibers of tlie Herbertville School Committee : — Messrs. J. W- Morrison, F. Beamsley, George Watts, A. Brightwell and J. M. Fislier. Mr. Fisher was re-elected chairman. Porangahau School. There was a large attendance at the Porangahau Pchool on Monday evening, when Mr. Hutana presided over Ihe meeting of householders. The following committee was eleeted: — Mr. f^>. Ross (chairman), Mr. R. H. De Lanev (secretary) , Rev. Cameron and Messrs. T. Kura and "W. Tliomas. Waipawa Theatre. The Waipawa Borough Council reeeived five tenders for renovating the Municipal Theatre, and that ot Mr Hayward, of Hastings, at £199 10s, was aeceptcd. The improvements will include painting and papermg the main hall and putting a six-foot wooden dado round the walls. As soon as the work of renovation is completed it is expected that a plant for talking pictures will be installed. Enjoyable Dance. An enjoyable dance, organised by the Waipawa Basketball Club, was lield in the Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance, which was very gratifying to the girls, as they had gone to a deal of trouble to make the function a success During an interval in the dancing Mr E. Kingston, on belialf of the members, made a presentation to Miss Iris Potts, who is leaving the district shortly. Mr L. Morley suitably responded on, Iier belialf. Rugby Fixtures. Waipawa, at "Waipawa, 2.45 p.m., Mr P. R. Smvrk; H.S.O.B. v. Onga Onga, at Waipukurau, 2.45 p.m., Mr D. P. Dinnan. Juniors: Te Aute v. Tikokino, at Pukehou, 2.45 p.m., Mr P. Logan; Waipawa v. Waipukurau, at Waipawa, 1.30 p.m., Mr T. Geenty; H.S.O.B. v. Onga, at Onga Onga, 2.45 p.m., Mr F. Sayliss. Kotemaori School. Exceptional interest was aroused at the meeting of the householders of Kotemaori for the eleetion of the school committee on Monday. Mr J. E. Parsons presided over a meeting which packed the schoolroom. The followmg is the result of the eleetion: — Messrs T. Foley, H. Hill, T. Kennedy, W. Parker and- W. Wasley. _ After a speech by Mr Kennedy, in. which the retirmg committee was thanked for past good services, the new committee met and appointed Mr W. Parker as chairman and Mr T. Kennedy as secretary. \ . -Season Ends. Tlie fishing season, which finislied at Waipukurau yesterday, has been a fairly good one, certainly better than was the case last year. During rne past month the sport- has been quite good, the fish heing in good condition, wh'ilst the rainbow trout have been full of fight. Brown trout appear to he more numerous in the Tuki Tuki in the vicinity of Waipukurau than hae heen the case previously, .Shags, as usual,' have been _ very troublesome, and if the fishing in Central Hawke s Bay is to improve materially stern war will require to be made on these parasites. Waipawa Theatre, To-morrow. Does law mean justice? You are the judge m "The Case of Lena Smith," Paramount's drama of the law versus love. Starring Esther Ralston, it offers her the greatest opportunity of her career for real dramatic portrayal. Taradale Piotures, Saturday. "The Californian Mail," a title that speaks of action, thrills, and _ speed, is showing on Saturday evening at eight o'clock. Furthermore, the star jf this picture is Ken Maynard, the screen's greatest rider, so that audiences are assured Jhe ultimate in entertalnment with a combination of a great story and a great star. "Tlie Californian Mail" is a story of early Califomia," when the Golden State was the "feeder" of gold into the coffers of the early Goverpment. It brings in graphic detail the four stage coach lines operating nnder 'Government franchise and carrying on their mail, passenger and express transportation business. Also showing tlie mermaid comedv, "Gentlemen Prefer Brun--ettes," latest news and Topical Gazettes, etc. Roads and Bridges. The members of the Waipawa County Council, accompanied by the clerk and engineer, have made a tliorough inspection of tlie _ roads ,and Ivridges in tlie county during the past two days. Yesterday, amongst other places, they visited the site of the proposed suspension bridge at Pendle Hill. While in this locality the Fletcher's Crossing bridge, which was- re-c-entiy repaired' after heing damaged by flood, was inspected. The repairs ■to the bridge have now been com--pleted and the contractors have commenced constructing -the fillings. When these are- completed the -bridge will again be opened for heavy traffic. The party also in.spected Carson's road at Wakarara, where extensive sawmill operations will commence in the near future. The whole of fhe roads in the county, including mnin highways and county roads, were found in very good ( t condition. i
