SYDNEY, May 30. "V e regard it as a compliment to Australia tliat a sister Dominion slioukl appoint as trade commissioner in the Commouwealth one wlio is Australian born," said the Prime Minister in proposing tlie health of Mr L. J. Sc-hmitt (recently appointed to tbe office by the New Zealand Government), who was given a luncheon by the Federai Cabinet in Canberra. Mr Scullin added that he was confident Mr Sclmiitt would .assist in cementing the friendly relations existing hetween the two countries. He asked the guest to conve.v to New Zealand a message frsom Australia to the effect that the Commonwealth desired to work in the greatest harmony with the Dominion and hoped trade between the two countries would be developed to mutual advantage. The extension of the tourist traffic from Australia should prove a profitable asset to New Zealand and be valuable for Australia' s publicity purposes. Mr Schmitt, in thanking the Ministers for the welcome. said he brought a message of goodwill from the people of the Dominion, who hoped Australia would soon experienee a return to the fullest prosperity. New Zealanders considered this land with its vast resources should soon find a solution for its economic problems. Mr Schmitt also conveyed greetings from the Maori people and presented the Prime Minister with a hook of .New Zealand views, and prevailed npon Mr Scullin and his ivife to be tbe first tourists secured bv him for the Dominion. They oromised to spend some time in New Zealand in January, when homeward bound from the Imperial Conference.
