THE PAST YEAR'S WORK. ANNUAL REPORT FOR MEMBERS. Tbe annual report of tlie Hawke's Bay Ai and P. Society to be presented to tbe annual meeting of members on Monday next reads as follows : — SPRING SHOW, 1929. "Tbe society' s Spring show was held on October 16 and T7 in probably the most perfect weather expevienced for tbis fixture and as a result a further record was created. It is to be noted tbat foir the-third year. in succession tbe society bas established ■ a fresb record for tbe Spring Sbow. "Tbe appended table sliows tbat entries totalled 2774 as against 3002 last year. Tbe gate receipts totalled £1618 15s as compared with £1397 last vear. Receipts totalled £3450 against £3202 last year and expenditure amounted to £2198 compared witb £2144 the previous year, leaving a balance of £1252 against last year's total of £1058. The number of.entries for the past three years bas been as follows : —
AUTUMN SHOW7", 1930. "The society was favoured with 'fine weather for the Autumn sbow which was "held on ' Marcb 9: Entries totalled 1963, being a record for the Autumn fixture. It was very gratifying to see tbe large increase in tbe fat stock section wbich was reestablisbed last year, also tbe large increase in tbe fruit section as compared with the previous year. Receipts totalled £630, compared with £584 last year, expenditure being £765 against £729 tbe previous year, leaving a loss of £129 compared with £145 last year. The entries of previous years since. tbe inaugnration of the Autumn Show are as follows:— 581, 935, 1194, *1083 904, 1101, 1062, 1260, 1316, 1417, 1610, 1614, 1528, 1750, 1448, 1558. 1504, 1563, 1531, 1621, 1754, 1705, 1589. 1822, 1783, 1627. RAM FAIR, 1930. "Tbe annual rain fair was held 011 January 30 and 31 and February 1. A.s sbown below the entries totalled 5546, compared witb 5006 tbe previous year. Stud rams 67 Flock rams 5479 Total ... ... ... 5546 MEMBERSHIP. "Members' subscriptions for tbe past year totalled £1974 against £1971 last year, wbich was tbe previous record for tbe society. New members elected during tbe year totalled 174 against 169 tne previous year, wbicli again demonstrates tbe necessity for a large number of new members each year to maintain the society's membership, and it is on these grounds that the committea appeals to tbe members notice ; it is quite obvious tbat tbe society owes its present jfosition to its splendid membership.
IMPROVEMENTS TO SHOW GROUNDS. . "During tbe year a number of improvements bave been effected, iucluding tbe ne®" dog p'avilion, additional cattle pensj additional bot water service, eieetric ligbt extended to the borse boxes and removaj of Messrs Nelson Bros. Ltd.'s old office building to a site adjoining tbe secretary's office. The inelusion of the -Iatter building will greatly add to tbe convenience of the public and the working ot tbe sbow ; aceommodation being provided for meetings, judges, gate staff,- press, cloakroom and public telepbone. PIONEERS' MEMORIAL. "Tbe Pioneers' Memorial Building to coinmemorate services of tbe late Mr J. H. Coleman and other pioneers of tbe society was completed prior to tbe Spring Bbqw. The opening ceremony was performed on People's Day by. Mrs Williams, wbose late husband, Mr Joseph Williams, was a president of the society for a number of years* Tbe purpose of -the building is to provide siiitable aceommodation for members of tbe Hastings ancl Napier Plunket Society wbo give their services during th$ ihowft 1 -tbe- interests of
women and children. Pnor> to the erection of the memorial building tbe wcrk was carried out in a.tent and in. declaring tbe building open Mrs Williams expressed tbanks to members of the society on behalf of tbe ladies wbo give their services and the mothers and children. OBITUARY. • "During tbe past year tbe' society has lost a number of members and it is with deep regret tliat your committee records tlie death of one of its past presidents, Mr -Arch. McLean, wbo has been associated with tbe society from its earliest days. To tbe relatives of tbe deceased members tbe committee extends deepest sympatby. . FINANCE. "From a perusal of tlie balancesbeet it will be' seen tbat tbe society has experienced another successful year for wbich members are to be heartily congratulated. After writing off £949 ls from buildings, yards and other iiiiprovements, £235 from railway siding and £91 2s lOd from plant and fittings, £20 from library, the assets of tbe society total £34,386 15s 3d, made up as follows : — Freehold property, 67 acres 2 rbods 1 percli £7855 (cost price) buildings, otlier improvementg and plant £2-5,040 5s, library £45, office furniture £80, Rathbone eudoivment £200, grandstand building fund £816 17s . 7d, stock 011 band and cash in general accouijt,£493 3s 4d. Liabilities against assets are £1669 ls 3d, nnpaid nurcbase money Messrs Nelsons (N.Z.) Ltd., and suspense account £53 18s 9d. leaving £32,663 l*5s 3d of assets over liabilities. FARM ACCOUNT. "Considering the unfavourable season tbe society's farming operations bave again been. most successful and tbanks of tbe society are due to Mr C. E Twist" for tbe farm management and to' tbe caretake'r. Mr G. B: Harper, for his unfailinsr care of the stock. THANIvS. The suceess acbieved by tbe Invercargill Society last year bas set a bigh standard for tlie Royal Sbow and your committee earnestly appeals to every member of tbe society to give whatever help possible in order that tbe coming sbow may be a eredit to the society and district., There are .many ways in wbich- members can eontribute to the suecess of tlie show, but your committee speciallv invites members to secure new members wherever possible, and would point out tbat for tbe coming show members will bave full privileges for tbree davs instead of tbe usu,al two davs. Tlie sehedule has received special atteiition and in the stock classes tbe prize money . has been consiclerablv increased.
