Tlie presence of hundreds of seagulls round oue spot on the heach near the Napier Municipal Baths atti aeted the attention ot pasers-by thi3 morning. The gulls took immediate exception to thii encroaclnnent on their doiyain and iristituted a concerted air raid upon the unfortunate bird below, upon which they would drop like a bolt from the blue before swooping up again into the sky, which .was filled^ by their raucous cries. Their compaign, hovever, was brought to an abrupt conclusion when one of those who had watched the unfair encounter entered the fray on hehalf of the weak-r cause and, ignoring tlie fact that the sea washed about In's feet, strode out and rescued the duck' from its unenviable position. 'Ihe bird placod firinly under his arm. he retraced his steps to the Marine Parade, whiTe the gulls, infr.riated at being robbed of their prey, wheeled clisgustedly nbove and uttered their protest in shrill screams before seeking other hunting grounds.
