PARDON FOR CONVICTS
JUMP INTO A RIVER. RESCUEri FROM DROWNING. The prison autliorities at Sing Sing, New York, have reeommendcd for pardon iour convicts who saved two men and their wives from drowning in the Hudson River in i'ront of the prison. Two tliousand prisoners wero amusmg tliemselves in the recreation grounds of the prison wlien it was noticed that a small rowing boat on the river was beginning to sink. Four prisoners volunteered to go to ihe rescue, and there was gre'ht excitement as the ehief warder opened tlie prisjn gates and let tliem out. The prisoners immediately dived into the river and brought tlie oecupants of the hoat asliore. One of the men in the boat was the cliief of the police of the New York Central Railway. Three years ago there was a great outcry when three young men were allowed to drown in tlie Hudson river just outside tlie prison hecause the warders refused to open the gates to allow some of the prisoners to go to k their help.
