River Clears, After being dxscoloured for a loiw period the Tuki Tuki river at Wai° pukurau is tolerably clear and sliould soon be in excellent order for fishing. Settiers' Fencing. Tlie settiers who were successful at the l'ecent land ballot for Otuuwhao section at Takapau are very busy getting the fences erected to- take over their places on November 6. Better Weather. Very much better weather has set in at Takapau, with slight frosts during the last few nights, and if the weather continues to keep good, sliearing will be in full force next month. Waipawa Streets. An inspection of all tlie roads and streets in the Waipawa borough wds xnade yesterday by the Mayor and councillors. A report on tlie tour will be presented and discussed at the next meeting of the council. Condolences. At the meeting of tlie Waipukurau A. and P. Association, a vote of sympathy was passecl to the relatives of the late Mr M. McGrath, who had been a valued member of the association for many years. Beautiful Weather. Aesterday was a day of perfect sunshine at Waipukurau and as the glass is set for steady weather the' prospects for more seasonable conclitions appear to be good. A few day of warm sunshine is urgently require'd by pastoralists. Appreoiated Visit, jj At the Pukeora Sanatorium last evening a concert was given under tlie direction of Misa Welsh, L.A.B., and Miss Polliill, assisted by various other artists. Matthew McGrath, of Waipukurau, was held, was evinced at the funeral, which took placo at Waipukurau yesterday, when representatives of all sections of the community followed ■the mortal remains to the graveside. The Rev. leather O'Donnell .Qfficiated at the graveside. Euchre Tournament. The fortnightly euchre tournament, wliich was held at the Waikopiro Institnte, Whetukum, on Saturday night — was very well attended. Being points niglit, great interest was shown in the games. Mrs Edgecombe won the j ladies prize with seven games and Mr G. Clegg the men's with liine games out of a possible of 11 games played. Mrs R. W . Olegg won the points prize for the ladies with 77 games and Mr Rendle the men's with 88 games. Takapau School. ' The monthly meeting of the Takapau fechool Committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr N. M. Paulsen preskling. The headmaster's report was read, and showed a roll attendance of 196 and that every thing was working smoothly. The secretary reported that a cricket set had been procured and tliat tbe boys were now in possession. Repairs were left in tbe hands of tbe chairman, with Messrs Paulsen and Norrie as a visiting committee for the ensuing month. ;
Complimentary Social. At the Waipawa Municipal Concert Hall last evening a complimentary social was tendered to Mr A. E. Jull, M.P., by supporters and friends to celebrate liis victory at the recent electioH. The Mayor, Mr G. H. Hunt, presided and there was a large attendance of friends from all parts of tbe electorate. A number of concert items were rendered and several short speecbes of congratulation were given by prominent members of tbe United Party. Mr Jull, on risiiig to reply, was given a most enthusiastic reception. Supper was then served on the stage and then the company spent a pleasant hour or two in dancing.
Obituary. The mortal remains of the late Mrs Blanclie Emmeline Clark were laid to rest in the Taradale Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The service in All feaints Church was taken by tlie Very Rev. Dean. Brocklehurst, Canou Arthur Williams, tbe Vicar, Rev. F. L. Frost, tbe Rev. E. A. McCutcheon, and Rev. J. Hobbs, who gave an impressive and beautiful address. The liymn "Let Saints on Earth" and "Abide ' with Me," were sung by the congregation. Tbe services at tbe graveside were taken bv tbe Very Rev. Dean Brocklehurst, the Rev. Canon Williams, the Rev. J. Hobbs. Other clergy present were the Rev. F. L. Frost, the Rev. A. Hodge, the Rev. E. A. McCutcheon, the Rev. J. Brierly, tbe Rev. Geddes. The hynrn "How Sweet Thy Name," was sung by those present. Many beautiful fioral tributes were laid 011 the grave, testifymg to the esteem and affec-tion in which the late Mrs Clark was held. Lodges Meet. The annual ritual competition be- j tween tbe Druids' Lodges in Noi'tli and Central Hawke's Bay was lield in the Oddfellows' Hall, Waipawa, 011 Tuesday night. rJlie following lodges competed : — Albion (Napier), Eureka (Hastings) and Ruataniwha (Waipawa). The trophies compcted for were the McClurg Cup for the opening aud closing of tlie Iqdge and the Potter Shiekl for the initiation cereuiony. Th© competition was lceenly contested, and at tlie conclusion Ruataniwha Lodge (Waipawa) were deelared the winner of both competitions. P.D.P. Bro. T. Rouse, on behalf of the j'udges, complimented all the competing lodges 011 their fine work and interpretation, and stated that the evening's competition had been one of the best held for some tirae. Sister Pedersen, the A.l). of tbe Waipawa Lodge, won tbe medal for the champion Arc-h Druic] of the year. Tbe R.A.D., Bro. Emmett, presented the trophies to the A.D. of the winning team, Sister Pedersen, wlio was vigorously applauded when she rose to reply. At tbe close of the business supper was _ served, followed by a pleasant social hour.
