Mr W. H. Gaisford, of Dannevirke, is visiting Napier. Mr Robert Bell, of Christchurch, is ou a visit to Napier. Mrs F. Wall, of Martinborough, is staying at the Masonic Hotel, Napier. Mr George T. Cottle, of Newark, New_ Jersey, is visiting Napier, and is staying at the Masonic Hotel. Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, late DirectorGeneral of Health, ig taking up his residence in Eltham this week. Mr E. J. Maher, of Waipawa, is at present in Wellington, where he was called hy the serious illness of his mother. Miss Hodge, of Havelock Nortli, who has been spending tbe past week in Wellington, is staying with Mrs Horaee Hodge in South Taranaki. IMr and Mrs J. S. Clarke, who spent the week-end with Mns Clarke's parents in Ormondville went on to Wellington hy the express train on Tuesday. Mr Clarke is on the railway ielieving staff. In conneetion with the C'ity and Guilds of London Institute examiuations, held i-ecently at the Napier Technical College, Alfred R. Wood and Frank R. Lloyd succeeded in passing grade 1, electrical engineering. Mr E. Leadley was selected at a largely attended rneeting of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, last evening for nomination for the position of R.S.A. representative on the Dominion unemployment board. — Press Association, Mr and Alrs Charles Newling and their little daughter, who have been spending some time with Mr Newling' s parents in Ormondville, left by the express train on Monday for Taumarunui, where they mean to speud some time with Mr Newling's relations. Miss Joan Edgley of Garfield, South Norsewood, liacl the misfortune a few days ago to get a piece of steel embedded, in an eye, suffering great pain and necessitating her going to Wellington to have it extracted. Latest reports ai-e to hand that an operation was performed and she is pragressing satisfactorily. , Mrs B. Englehretsen who was ad~ mitted to the Dannevirke Hospital some time ago, has returned to her home after receiving a fortnight's treatment at that institution. Her little son is still an inmate of the hospital, A successful_ operation was performed on the child a few days ago and it is now stated that he is improving satisfactorily. 1 Miss Nan Rogers, aged 23, has been elected president of the Union of University Liberal Societies in Great Britain, a woman thug holding the post for the first time in its history. She graduated with honours in economics at Glasgow TJniversity. Miss/ Rogers has already Had one "first" to_ her credit, being the first woman to win the Gladstone prize for economics. Captain J. P. Foster, marine superintendent of the Union Company, has resigned from the company's service. Captain V. G. Wehh, assistaut marine superintendent, has been appointed acting-superintendent. Captain Foster has had long service with the Union Company, and was master of several vessels. During the war he was in command of the Waimarino. Ten years later he succeeded Captain Coll Macdonald, of Dunedin, as marine superintendent. Captain Wehh waS- master of the Mapourika (now the Ngaio), and during the war commanded various vessels, including the Willochra. Miss L. C. Lesley House, of Cashel street, Christchurch, has had the honour of carrying off the "Bookman" (London) prize for poetry with her poem entitled, "Doles," which appears in the Septemher nunlber of the "Bookman." Miss House, whose verse_ is well known throughout the Dominion, has also much prose to her credit. Her work has been puhlished in New Zealand and Australian papers and, journals, and also in many_ of the larger English journals. In private life Miss L. C. Lesley House is Miss F.lsie Macleod Smith.
