Afr Hoover formally admitted the likelihood of a Treasury deficit at the end of the fiscal year, and administration circles indicated that they had abandoned all hope of avoiding the imposition of higher income taxes for the present year. iUr Smoot, chairman of the Senate Finance Coniinittee, following a conference with Mr Hoover, stated that the Treasury deficit would probably total 182.000,000 dollars. He added that he could suggest uo remedy except the possibihty that certain tariff rates were not sufficiently higli. It is understood tlie Government has been sounding- out business leaders relative to the feasihility of the issue of (joverm'nent honds in order to meet tlie foulcniplated doficiT, since the amhitions building programme to aid emplnymenh cannot be reduced at the present time. ,
