LITTLE WORRIES DISPELLED., Dlscrimination Not So Keen.
LONDON, Nov. 29. Professor Sidnev Smith, lecturing at tlie Edinburgh University, gave one of tlie most competent analysis of the social value of aloohol in the history oi nedagogics. He expressed the opinion that alcoliol exerfced its effects almost entirely on the hrain. Under its influenees little worries tended to disappear, small disappointments of everyday life were lost and the sting of the world in general appeared more pleasant. Alcoliol made seif-expression. easier. Tbe shv man lost his selfconscionsness and the critic was less critical. Nevertheless, when the reactions were analysed it would h© found ihat there was a subtle hut distinct loss of dlscrimination and fastidiousness of control. which became more pronounced with larger doses. especially if taken withont food. There was little correlation hetween drunkenness and serious erime, hut a close eorrelatioa between minor Tiolence and neglect o? Jiilrlrcn.
