The nionthly meeting of the Norsewood JMethodist Ladies' Guild was held on Wednesday afternoon, at the home of Mrs H. P. Mortenson, when a very enjoyahle time was spent, One new member was admitted. Farmers' Union. Tlie Norsewood branch of the Women's Division of the Farrners' Union was held.at Mi's C. Itosacker's residence on Monday evening. Four new members were admittfed and remits for the confereiice were discussed. It was decided to . make a donation to the Gaiiter Campaign Fund. Christmas tree donations were received . J. Castles said that some time ago representations had been made to the Raihvay Department concerning the Kopua crossiug, which, he claimed, was oue of the most dangerous m Hawke's Bay. "Nothing will be done until someone gets" it in tlie neck," he remarked. Up to the present no reply had heen received from the department regarding the representations made bv the settlers. The circular was received. Waipawa School SuccOssds. The pupils of the Waipawa District High School were very successful at the proficiency exammation, which was held this week. This character formed the central figure of Mrs Blair Niles' book, "Condemned to Devil's Island,'' from which "Condemned" was adapted. The original of this character is livfng now in his •cell on Devil's Island and Mrs Niles has had let,ters from hira twice since her six months' visit of inspection two years ago — the first ever allowed by tlie Frencli Government to any writer.
