ON THE FIELD
athletics in hawke's bay SOME SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS
(Notes by "Spike.".
Amateur atliletics continue to flourifcli tlirougliout Hawke's Bay, and the evening meetings lield by the Hastings oud Waipawa C'lubs last week were of the usual high order. At the Waipawa meeting mauy of the eompetitors who won at the last meeting scored again, showing improved form. R. Bibbv again won the 100 yards. This is his third successive win in this event, and all have been regstered from the same rnark, namely nine 3 ards. Harold Nairn ran a sterling race from virtual gcratch and beat a large field comfortably in the quarter-mile. Harrv Leach,- from the same mark, did well to finish third as he did not gete sucli a good run as Nairn. # * • in the dark The half-mile was won bv M. Holmes off 90 yards. The time, 1.53, indicates tliat the handicapper was well in the dark regarding tliis runner's abil'ity. - Ti. Britten again showed that he is the best cyclist in Central Hawke's Bay by tnking the.mile race from the back mark. J. Walters, on 220, won the two-mile event. Tn the ladies' event a • dead heat was recorded between hliss G. Smales and Miss Sullivan, with Miss Logan third. The Waipukurau ladies' relay team scored a win over Waipawa and Hastings* in an even contest. At the Hastings meeting entries, as usual. were large and finishes close. L. Taylor, formerly known as a halfniiler, proved his versatility bv annexing the 100 final from M. Cameron. This event drew five heats, two semifiuals and a final. Among the nlace-getting in • the heats. Ewen (Waipukurau\ Henderson. Bromley and Collinge showed promise.
full of merjt The half-mile saw Rusty Verry return to form and score a good win fiom M. Cameron. This was Camerons first start in a half-mile and his eli'ort was f all of merit. _ The 300 yards handicap saw another close finish. Griffen (Napier) just got liome from Bird, with inches separating Cameron, Nairn and Verry. The hop, step and jumP saw very little between about six of the eompetitors, tlie best ,iump being recorded by Burton, 40ft. 5in. In this event the rule which does not allow the competitor's foot to go over the mark in tnking off, seemed to be disregarded. Why ? Frank Robson continued hi$ winning way. He eollected the mile and a-half event on Wednesday. In the threemile race he received a severe shaking when Stevens fell in front of him in the last lap. Charlie Rohson's win in the threemil© was long overdue. Perhaps he will now come back to his form of two years ago. in good style F. Mollison took the lap dash in good style. H© loses uo time in getetiug off the mark. The ladies' events were again keenly^ contested, Miss Kitt seeuring a win in the 75 yards event wliile Miss Edna Morton won th© 120 yards. Miss G. Synies rau well in both events and in the finals was close enough to get a third and a seeond. Napier Chib men were all out to do their best at the Savidan meeting today. The selector will choose the rep: esentatives for the county club's championships on these performances. a In last week's notes it was erroneously stated that Goudie won the first lieat of the one-lap cyele dash at the last Napier evening meeting. It was not Goudie but Amian who won the heat.
