CYCLING SPORTS AT PETONE.

In hatt-a-gale of wind a^d a threatened deluge of rain the Petone and Hutt Cycling Club is holding its spring meeting on the Petone Recreation Ground this afternoon. It is the club's inaugural sports gathering, and but for the boisterous state of the weather it had everything in its favour for success. The ground!? were formally opened with a procession of cyclists headed by the Mayor (Mr. It. C. Kirk), Mrs. and Master Kirk, and Councillor Mothes. His Worship declared the grounds open, and invited cyclists to put up as many records as they could, as the length of the newly-formed track (440 yds lft Gin) had been certified to by Mr. Richmond, surveyor. The following races were decided up to the time we went to press :—: — Half-Mile Maiden.— First heat— Compton, 40yds, 1 ; Hollard, 25yds, 2 ; Young, 45yds, 3. Time, lmin 20sec. Second heat— Rushtou, 40yds, 1 ; Wood, 30yds, 2 ; Lurseu, 35yds, 3. Time, lmin ISseo. Third heat— Chesterman, 40yds, 1 ; Greenough, 15yds, 2; Coulin, 25yds, 3. Time, linin 20 4-ssec. Final — Chesterman, 1; Rushton. 2; Greenougb, 3. Time, lmin 15sec. Won by two lengths. Plat Race, 100 yds. Run iv three beats. — Final — H. Wakelin, lOvds, 1; E. W. Evans, 7*yds, 2; P. Ryan, 10yds, 3. Time, I/O 2-ssec. Won on the tape.
