It is now staled that tLe liabilities of the London and Paris Exchange amount to £225,000. ' Arrangements are progressing to settle the matter aiid resume business on Monday. BRITAIN'S MERCHANT CRUISERS. LONDCKN, 2nd. December. The Admiralty -will not renew the cruiser agreement with the Peninsula and Oriental Company. [The agrement with the P. and 0. Company expires on 15th December, 1905. The company has four ships in receipt of an annual subvention, and permitted to fly the blue ensign. They are the Caledonia, Persia, Arabia, and India. Twenty others of the company's vessels are held at\the disposal of the Admiralty without subsidy. The total number of Royal naval reserved merchant cruisersis 61.] THE PEACE CONFERENCE. WASHINGTON, 2nd December. President Roosevelt acquiesces in Russia's suggestion to postpone the Peace Conference till after the war. In the invitations which have been issued to the Powers the date of the proposed c6nference has been purposely omitted lest some of the Powers should hesitate during the war to discuss the rights of neutrals. THE MARSHALL ISLANDS. (Received December 3, 10.2 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. In connection with the reported restriction of trade with the Marshall Islands, the German Consulate points out the duty on copra was fixed at the islands, and was therefore not the outcome of the projected rofcurn of the steamer Ysabel to the group. THE FEDERAL TARDJF COMMISSION. MELBOURNE, This Day.The Tariff Commission- will consist of eight members and the Chairman. The members selected are all politicians, with one exception. Sir John Quick has been appointed Chairman. REPORTED DEFICIENCY. MELBOURNE, This Day. The accounts of the local manager of a well known firm, with headquarters in London and branches throughout the Commonwealth, it is alleged, show a shortage of £2000. The manager has been suspended. GOLD IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. PERTH, 2nd December. Two prospectors on the Murchison »oldfield crushed 167 pounds of stone for 600oz of gold. The stone was struck at a depth of 30ft. PAYMENT OF MEMBERS. PER'iri, 2nd December. The^ Legislative Council has rejected a proposal to reduce the salary of members from £200 to £100 per annum, as well as an amendment favouring the total abolition of payment of members.
